The caterer
The caterer is often the largest item in the budget, because it is paid per person. Here is how to compare quotes on the same basis.

What the caterer provides
Depending on the package: dinner (often several courses), drinks, tea and pastries, sometimes service, tableware, tables and decoration. Some caterers provide the venue too.
Questions to ask
- Is the price per person? What exactly does it include (dishes, drinks, tea, pastries, fruit)?
- Are service, tableware, linen and waiters included? How many waiters for how many guests?
- Is there a tasting before you sign?
- When is the final guest count due, and what happens if it changes?
- How are children counted?
- Does the caterer work in your venue, and is there a kitchen on site?
- What deposit, and when is the balance due?
- What happens to leftovers?
Comparing quotes
- Ask every caterer for the same menu, for the same number of guests.
- Multiply the price per person by the number of guests, then add what is not included.
- Put the deadline for the final count in your calendar.
Common questions
When do you give the caterer the final count?
On the date set in the quote, often one to two weeks before. Chase families who have not answered the week before that.
